Module 8. Basic aerodynamics

What is the main purpose of a frise aileron?

  • Help the pilot overcome aerodynamic hinge loads.
  • Decrease drag on the up going wing surface.
  • Increase drag on the up going aileron.

Explanation

A Frise aileron is hinged so that when it deflects up its leading edge protrudes into the airflow beneath the wing, increasing drag on the up-going aileron (the rising-wing side). This added drag balances the higher induced drag on the descending wing, reducing the adverse yaw that would otherwise oppose the turn.

Hello Imran88.

Please check wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adverse_yaw
