Electrochemical reaction is caused by the contact of

  • bonding.
  • moisture on the surface of the metal.
  • dissimilar metals.

Explanation from PART66Online

An electrochemical corrosion reaction needs an electrolyte to carry current between anodic and cathodic sites; on an airframe this is supplied by moisture on the metal surface. Dissimilar metals or a bond merely set up or control the potential difference, but without the surface moisture acting as electrolyte the reaction cannot proceed.

Wouldn't C be correct as 'electrochemical' corrosion requires a anode and a cathode, where as a 'chemical' corrosion being oxidation would be moisture on the surface of the metal? Please help? Thanks.

Hi Leehenson. Two dissimilar metals in contact will initiate galvanic corrosion, not electro-chemical. But metal + some electrolyte = electro-chemical corrosion.

Thanks for reply, but I'm still not sure about this question as galvanic corrosion is electrochemical?
