A journal bearing supports a rotating shaft and carries load acting at right angles to the shaft axis, i.e. a radial load. Loads acting along the shaft axis are axial (thrust) loads and are taken by thrust bearings, not journal bearings.

Question is a bit ambiguous! Wouldn't the direction of load be radial and the type of load be compression?

My humble opinion.No because a radial bearing is also known as a journal bearing so its load is radial, compression should mean that it squishes it.
