Module 6. Materials & hardware

A worm drive creates

  • a drive in 2 planes and transmits both directions.
  • a drive in 1 plane but transmits both directions.
  • a drive in 2 planes but transmits 1 direction only.

Explanation

A worm drive turns the drive through a right angle between shafts in different planes, and because of the shallow lead angle it is normally irreversible - the worm can drive the wheel but the wheel cannot back-drive the worm. Hence it transmits drive in one direction only.

Boydonnelly asking:

Can somebody explain to me how a worm drive dives in 2 planes and a single direction? I believe it is 1 plane with 2 directions I.e. forwards nd reverse in the same plane

As you can see in this picture, the worm can move the worm wheel, but the worm wheel can't move the worm, because the worm blocking the worm wheel. And if the worm wheel rotates in plane y, the worm wheel will be rotates in plane x.

I thinking that worm can move in 2 directions, so the wheel also can move clockwise and anticlockwise.
