Worm drives operate in shafts which are
- 90 degrees to each other and in a differing plane.
- 90 degrees to each other and in the same plane.
- parallel to each other and in the same plane.
Explanation
A worm and worm-wheel set transmits drive between shafts that are at right angles and that do not intersect, i.e. they lie in different (offset) planes. This non-intersecting right-angle arrangement is what distinguishes a worm drive from intersecting bevel gears.
