Module 4. Electronic fundamentals

A Zener diode is used for

  • voltage stabilisation.
  • rectification.
  • voltage regulation.

Explanation

A Zener diode operates in reverse breakdown, holding a near-constant voltage across itself over a range of current, which is exactly what is needed to regulate a supply voltage. It is not used as a rectifier, since that is the role of an ordinary forward-conducting diode.

Mihir Somaia asking:

Isn't regulation the same as stabilization?

Regulation is when the voltage is regulated (higher or lower, where stabilization is a fixed value which you wish to maintain at a satiable level.

Zener is a particular diode uses for VOLTAGE STABILIZATION, REGULATION and VOLTAGE CONTROL. In fact the Major use is STABILIZATION and NO VOLTAGE REGULATION. For This use is preferred TRANSISTOR
