A short circuit in a d.c ratiometer will give

  • max scale reading
  • zero scale reading
  • min scale reading

Explanation from PART66Online

A DC ratiometer compares the currents in two coils, one in series with the fixed reference and one with the variable sensing resistor. A short circuit across the sensing element collapses its resistance, driving the current through that coil to its extreme and deflecting the pointer to the minimum end of the scale. An open circuit produces the opposite, full-scale, deflection.
