Module 5. Digital techniques / Electronic instrument systems

Common aircraft fibreoptics use

  • modulating intensity on direct read.
  • modulating frequency on direct read.
  • modulating phase on direct read.

Explanation

Common aircraft fibre optic links use intensity modulation with direct detection-the source's optical power (brightness) is varied to encode the data and the receiver simply reads the received intensity. This is far simpler to implement than modulating the optical frequency or phase, which require coherent detection.
