  • ball and roller bearings
  • plain bearings

Gas-turbine compressor and turbine shafts run at very high speed and carry both radial and axial (thrust) loads, so they are supported on anti-friction ball and roller bearings. Ball bearings take the axial thrust loads while roller bearings carry the radial loads and allow for thermal growth of the shaft; plain or sintered bearings could not survive these speeds and loads.

What about Needle Roller bearings, those are not balls?
