If a burner was down, in a multi-can system, the engine would tend to
- hang up.
- run up.
- surge.
Explanation
In a multi-can (cannular) combustion system a dead burner produces an uneven temperature and pressure distribution around the turbine annulus, disturbing the airflow and tending to make the engine surge. The mismatched gas-path conditions promote compressor instability rather than a clean hang-up or run-up.
