The shape is a ring (annulus), so its area is the area of the outer circle minus the area of the hole. The radii are half the diameters, 3 in and 1.5 in, so A = pi x (3 squared - 1.5 squared) = pi x (9 - 2.25) = 6.75 pi square inches. The 3 pi option simply subtracts the diameters (6 - 3) instead of the squared radii.
