Sweepback increases Mcrit by

  • decreasing the amount of airflow over the lowest point on the aerofoil section.
  • decreasing the amount of airflow over the highest point on the aerofoil section.
  • increasing the amount of airflow over the highest point on the aerofoil section.

Explanation

Only the chordwise component of velocity contributes to acceleration over the aerofoil. Sweepback reduces this effective velocity, so the airflow over the point of maximum thickness (highest point) accelerates less and reaches sonic speed only at a higher free-stream Mach number, thereby raising the critical Mach number.
