Module 8. Basic aerodynamics

Angle of attack on a down going wing in a roll

  • increases.
  • decreases.
  • unaffected.

Explanation

As a wing rolls, the down-going wing moves downward through the air, which adds an upward component to the relative airflow and increases its effective angle of attack. The up-going wing experiences the opposite. This difference produces extra lift on the down-going wing, giving the roll damping that opposes the motion.
