The rotating guide vanes, formed at the inducer or eye of a centrifugal impeller, turn the incoming air smoothly into the impeller and begin raising its pressure, providing an initial diffusing action before the air passes through the main impeller and diffuser. Protection from foreign objects is the role of the intake screen, not these vanes.
