Module 8. Basic aerodynamics

If the radius of a turn is reduced the load factor will

  • increase.
  • decrease.
  • stay unchanged.

Explanation

A tighter turn requires a steeper bank to balance the larger centripetal force needed, and load factor equals 1/cos(bank angle). As the radius is reduced the bank angle and the required lift both grow, so the load factor increases. Reducing radius therefore raises the g loading on the airframe.

sierra3 asking:

if i reduce the radius, don't the a/c decrease the load factor?
