Three classic exam-day traps

Unit conversion: cm² ↔ m²

Candidates instinctively divide by 100 because that works for length, but area needs ÷10 000 and volume ÷1 000 000.

Diameter vs radius

Cylinder & sphere formulas use radius (½ × diameter). Plug diameter straight in and the answer quadruples or eight-folds.

SOH-CAH-TOA mix-up

Under time pressure, cosine (adj/hyp) gets swapped with tangent (opp/adj). Mnemonic on paper before you start.

What Module 1 covers — in plain English

Module 1 of the EASA Part-66 syllabus tests the mathematical fundamentals every licensed aircraft maintenance engineer relies on day-to-day: reading drawings, sizing components, working with units of measurement, and interpreting graphical data on test equipment. It is one of the shortest modules in the syllabus but one of the highest-failed at first attempt — almost entirely because the exam is sat without a calculator and many candidates underestimate how rusty their long-division and unit-conversion arithmetic has become.

Category A candidates need only knowledge level 1 in some sections and skip the algebraic equations, constructions and trigonometry entirely. B1, B2, B2L and B3 candidates all sit the same 32-question paper at knowledge level 2 — you need to understand the principles and be able to apply them, not just recognise them. Q1 Arithmetic

Express the fraction 7/8 as a decimal.

Divide 7 by 8: 7 ÷ 8 = 0.875. A common trap is misplacing the decimal — always cross-check by multiplying the result back (0.875 × 8 = 7).

A blueprint shows a hole of 0.3751" to be drilled. What fraction size drill bit is most nearly equal?

3/8 = 0.375 — exactly the blueprint value (rounded). 5/16 = 0.3125 and 3/16 = 0.1875. Decimal-to-fraction conversion is heavily tested in Module 1 because aircraft drawings often mix units.

Solve the following equation: 5x = 3x + 2.

Area = 11 × 120 = 1320 cm². To convert to m², divide by 10,000 (because 1 m² = 100 cm × 100 cm). 1320 ÷ 10,000 = 0.132 m². Unit conversion between cm² and m² is one of the most-missed traps in this module.

Volume of a cylinder = π × r² × h. Radius is half the diameter (100 cm). π × 100² × 20 ≈ 628 318 cm³, which rounds to 628 000 cm³. Watch for the diameter-vs-radius trap — using 200 instead of 100 quadruples the answer.

Module 1 — frequently asked questions

How many questions are in the EASA Part-66 Module 1 exam?
Category A candidates sit 16 multiple-choice questions, while Category B1 (and B2/B2L/B3) candidates sit 32. So the paper is twice as long for B-category candidates, reflecting the deeper knowledge level required in algebra, geometry and trigonometry. All questions are multiple-choice with a single correct answer.
What is the pass mark for EASA Part-66 Module 1?
The pass mark is 75%, the same for every EASA Part-66 module. You must answer at least 12 of the 16 questions (Category A) or 24 of the 32 (Category B1) correctly. There is no negative marking, so it is always worth attempting every question rather than leaving a blank.
How long is the Module 1 exam?
Category A candidates get 20 minutes for their 16 questions, and Category B1 (B2/B2L/B3) candidates get 40 minutes for 32. That works out to roughly 75 seconds per question in both cases. Because Module 1 is sat without a calculator, that time budget is tighter than it looks — practising mental arithmetic and long division beforehand is essential.
Which EASA licence categories require Module 1?
Module 1 (Mathematics) is required for all licence categories: Cats A, B1, B2, B2L and B3. Category A candidates take a reduced-depth version and skip the algebraic equations, geometrical constructions and trigonometry, while B1, B2, B2L and B3 candidates sit the full 32-question paper at knowledge level 2. What does Module 1 cover, and what do students find hardest?
Module 1 covers three areas: Arithmetic (fractions, decimals, ratios, percentages, unit conversion, areas, volumes, squares, cubes and roots), Algebra (simple expressions, linear and simultaneous equations, indices, binary and hexadecimal numbering) and Geometry (geometrical constructions, graphs and charts, and trigonometry using SOH-CAH-TOA). The most-missed traps are area and volume unit conversion — candidates divide by 100 as they would for length, but area needs ÷10,000 (cm² to m²) and volume ÷1,000,000. Two other classic slips are plugging diameter straight into cylinder and sphere formulas instead of the radius (half the diameter), and swapping cosine (adjacent/hypotenuse) with tangent under time pressure.
How should I revise for Module 1?
Because the exam is sat without a calculator, the single biggest cause of first-attempt failures is rusty long division and unit-conversion arithmetic — so practise those by hand rather than relying on mental estimation. Drill the specific traps: convert cm² to m² by dividing by 10,000 (and cm³ to m³ by 1,000,000), always halve the diameter to get the radius before using a circle, cylinder or sphere formula, and write SOH-CAH-TOA on your paper before you start the trigonometry questions. Working through timed practice questions in the same style as the exam builds both speed and confidence for the roughly 75-seconds-per-question pace.
