Study Notes — New Edition

A new edition of the Study Notes is out today, and it is worth being honest about what that means. Usually a new edition is a tidy-up: a few corrections, a figure redrawn, a price on the back. This one is a rewrite. All 17 modules, first page to last.

The reason is a gap that turns up in almost every set of notes written for this exam. They will tell you that a thermocouple produces a small voltage proportional to a temperature difference, and then move on to the next bullet. That sentence is perfectly true. It is also no use to you when the question in front of you asks which junction sits in the gas stream, and what the gauge does when the other one gets warm.

This edition is written to answer the second kind of question.

The previous edition came to 912 pages. This one comes to 8,380. That is not padding. It is the room it takes to show the working, explain why the wrong answer looks tempting, and say what the thing actually does on an aircraft rather than only what it is called.

The shape has changed too. It used to be one enormous file. The new edition is 17 separate books, one per module, so when you sit down to work on Module 7 you open Module 7. Each book is bookmarked by syllabus paragraph, so the contents panel in your reader drops you straight onto 7.4 or 15.12 instead of somewhere near it.

Some run long. Maintenance Practices is 878 pages on its own. Gas Turbine Engine is 820. Mathematics, at 165, is the shortest — there is only so much to say about arithmetic, and we did not pretend otherwise.
