The method of ascertaining the voltage of a standard aircraft lead-acid battery is by checking

  • the voltage with rated load switched ON.
  • the voltage immediately after charging.
  • the voltage off load.

Explanation from PART66Online

A meaningful state-of-charge voltage reading is taken off load, with no current being drawn, so the internal-resistance drop does not distort it. Reading the voltage while a rated load is switched on would show a lower figure that reflects the load drop rather than the true cell condition.

What is the difference between Off load and open circuit?
