Module 12. Helicopter aerodynamics, structures and systems

If the pitot and static pipe lines were cross connected at the instrument panel connection, application of pressure to the pitot head would cause the

  • altimeter reading to increase, vertical speed indicator to indicate descent.
  • altimeter reading to decrease, vertical speed indicator to indicate descent.
  • altimeter reading to decrease, vertical speed indicator to indicate climb.

Explanation

With the lines cross-connected, pressure applied to the pitot head is delivered to the static side of the instruments. The altimeter senses this higher static pressure as a lower altitude, so its reading decreases, and the rising static pressure is interpreted by the VSI as a descent. Both instruments therefore behave as if the aircraft were going down.
