Explanation

In a shunt motor, speed is inversely related to field flux, so weakening the field by reducing field current raises the speed. With less flux the motor draws more armature current to meet the load, and the higher armature current increases the developed torque. Field weakening is the standard way to run a shunt motor above base speed.
