The deflection of the ADI command bars when flying a localiser approach is proportional to

  • the difference between the amplitudes on the two modulations.
  • the difference in amplitude of the two r.f. carriers.
  • the sum of the amplitude of the two modulations.

Explanation

A localiser radiates two overlapping lobes modulated at 90 Hz and 150 Hz on the same carrier; on the centreline the modulation depths are equal and off-centre one dominates. The ADI command bar deflection is proportional to this difference in modulation depth (the difference in depth of modulation), not to the carrier amplitudes or their sum.
