Module 11. Aeroplane aerodynamics, structures and systems

A battery in situ on an aircraft

  • charges at a fairly constant rate because generator voltage remains constant.
  • may charged at an excessive rate if initial battery voltage is low.
  • may charge slowly if initial battery voltage is low.

Explanation

On the aircraft the battery is charged at essentially constant bus voltage. If the battery's initial voltage is low (deeply discharged) the difference between bus voltage and battery voltage is large, so the charging current can be excessive until the battery voltage rises, which is why deeply flat batteries can overheat on a constant-voltage system.

What is meant by "situ"?
