Module 12. Helicopter aerodynamics, structures and systems

Compressibility error in a pitot head is caused by

  • misalignment of pitot head.
  • blockage in the pitot tube.
  • compression of air in the tube at high speed.

Explanation

At high speed the air entering the pitot tube is compressed rather than behaving as an incompressible flow, so the sensed dynamic pressure is higher than the simple square-law value. This compressibility error makes the ASI over-read and must be corrected for at high Mach numbers. It stems from the air's compression, not from a blockage or misalignment.

Jordi asking:

shouldnt it be blockage or misalignment?
