Module 11. Aeroplane aerodynamics, structures and systems

On large aircraft, braked wheel assemblies are normally inflated with

  • nitrogen and not more than 5% of air.
  • an argon and CO2 mixture.
  • nitrogen.

Explanation

Braked wheels run hot, so they are charged with inert nitrogen to avoid the explosion risk that oxygen in air poses when mixed with hot tyre gases and any volatiles. Standards allow a small residual of air, typically no more than about 5%, which is why the nitrogen-with-limited-air answer is correct over pure nitrogen or an argon/CO2 mix.

me too but i think the most logical one is this rather than plain nitrogen.
