If the reverse bias voltage across a diode is too high

  • load current reduces to zero.
  • load current increases rapidly.
  • load current reverses.

Explanation

Excessive reverse voltage drives the diode into breakdown, where avalanche or Zener action causes the reverse (load) current to rise rapidly. It does not fall to zero or reverse direction. In an unprotected circuit this surge can overheat and destroy the diode.
