Module 1. Mathematics

Given that s=0, solve the equation s=ut + 1/2at^2 for the two possible values of t.

  • t=0, t=-2u/a.
  • t=0, t=a/2u.
  • t=0, t=2u/a.

Explanation

With s = 0, the equation ut + 1/2 at^2 = 0 factors to t(u + 1/2 at) = 0. One root is t = 0; the other comes from u + 1/2 at = 0, giving t = -2u/a.

Hi, can some please explain?

0=ut + ½at^2

remove t as a common factor
which leaves t(u + ½at)= 0

equate t=0 and

u + ½at = 0
½at= -u
t = -2u/a
