A paramagnetic material has a relative permeability of

  • zero.
  • less than unity.
  • greater than unity.

Explanation

Paramagnetic materials are weakly attracted by a magnetic field, giving a relative permeability slightly greater than one. Diamagnetic materials have permeability just below unity, so a value of less than one or zero would not describe a paramagnetic material.

A paramagnetic material has a greater permeability than free space (vacuum). So its relative permeability is greater than 1.

Its like a magnetometer... It picks up magnetic flux or permeabiliy but
Isn't really a true magnet but what's called a flux valve which are normally located in the wing tips. Caution or care should be taken to insure the screws you remove in the panels to access this valve are aluminum or non magnetic..or it will throw off the readings. Just like you wouldn't want to throw your iPad (with magnetic closing tabs), up onto the glareshied panel. That will also affect the whiskey compass! But your o.k. on an MD-80 because the compass is located in the back wall and has a reverse compass card.
? How do read the compass in an MD-80.
