Module 1. Mathematics

Evaluate (3x^2 - 6xy) / (x-2y).

  • Cannot be simplified further.
  • 3x-3y
  • 3x

Explanation

Factor the numerator 3x^2 - 6xy as 3x(x - 2y). Dividing by (x - 2y) cancels that common factor, leaving 3x. This is a clean cancellation, so the expression does simplify further.

hitman asking:

how you evaluate this?

Firstly if you simplify the first part of this (3x^2-6xy). You can do this by finding the common values in both 3x^2 and -6xy. Coincidentally this (x-2y), so this ill now read 3x(x-2y). A good tip is to multiply back out the bracket once you have found this to double check the first park of the answer.

Now substitute this back into the original question so it reads 3x(x-2y)/(x-2y).

Looking at this you can now cancel out both the (x-2y) on either side to leave you with 3x on its own.
