A ballast resistor is fitted
- in parallel, to give identical readings for all engines.
- in series, to give identical resistance values for all engines.
- in series, to give identical resistance values to all airframes.
Explanation
A ballast resistor is wired in series in the thermocouple circuit so that the total external (lead) resistance is standardised across installations. Equalising this resistance ensures that gauges read consistently regardless of the actual cable lengths in a given airframe.
