Module 3. Electrical fundamentals

The average value of 100 volts peak AC is

  • 70.7 volts.
  • 141. 4 volts.
  • 63.7 volts.

Explanation

The average value over a half-cycle of a sine wave is 0.637 of the peak, so 0.637 * 100 = 63.7 V. The 70.7 V figure is the RMS value (0.707*peak) and 141.4 V is sqrt 2*peak, so neither represents the average.

obrien99 asking:

I think this might be incorrect.
i assume the question is looking for the rms value?
the formula for rms is -
peak voltage x 0.707
or
peak voltage / 1.414

both formulas give 70.7 as the answer

am i missing something?

Hey Obrien.
Not RMS value but average value, that are different things.
Average value of AC sine wave equals 0.637 * peak voltage, so answer is 63.7
Here is good article for those who will need information about all that stuff: http://www.learnabout-electronics.org/ac_theory/ac_waves02.php
