What is the slope between the points (3,1) and (9,3)?
- 1/3
- 3/1
- 2
Explanation
Slope equals the change in y over the change in x. From (3, 1) to (9, 3) that is (3 - 1) / (9 - 3) = 2 / 6 = 1/3. Writing it as 3/1 inverts the ratio and gives the wrong slope.

Slope = rise/run

for simple formula, (y2-y1)/(x2-x1)
Example above: (3-1)/(9-3) = 2/6 = 1/3 as gradient/slope
Example above: (3-1)/(9-3) = 2/6 = 1/3 as gradient/slope
