Module 3. Electrical fundamentals

In an inductive resistive circuit, 1 amp flows from a supply of 100V dissipating 50 Watts of power. The phase angle is

  • 60degrees.
  • 90degrees.
  • 45degrees.

Explanation

True power is P = V x I x cos(theta), so cos(theta) = 50 / (100 x 1) = 0.5. The angle whose cosine is 0.5 is 60 degrees, giving the phase angle. A 90-degree angle would dissipate no power, and 45 degrees would correspond to a power factor of about 0.707.

Hey!
Apparent power = amps * volts = 1 * 100 = 100VA
True power = 50W
Power Factor = TP/AP = 50/100 = 0.5
PF = COSINE of phase angle.
0.5 = COSINE of phase angle.
PA = arccos(0.5) = 60.
