Module 13. Aircraft aerodynamics, structures and systems

What does an INS calculate on power up?

  • Last Known Longitude and Latitude
  • Last Known Latitude
  • Last Known Longitude

Explanation

An inertial navigation system needs latitude before it can begin: latitude sets the magnitude of the Earth-rate component the gyros must compensate during gyrocompass alignment. The last known latitude is recalled on power-up to seed this process, after which the present position is established before flight.

sasna asking:

INS or IRS has to do with both lat and long....'??

There already was same question from you with same answers and I corrected it to "both lat and long". But now I start thinking what correct answer is "last known lat". I think it is really small chance for mistake in 2 same questions. Need to study deeply this question. If you will get some info about that, please post it here.

So, answer is correct. At align INS obtains direction to true north and current latitude. While alignment pilot must enter present coordinates (lat and long). Based on that data INS finishes alignment process and INS can be used for navigation. Found that info in my study notes.
