Module 12. Helicopter aerodynamics, structures and systems

What is the advancing blade on a helicopter doing?

  • Increasing in lift.
  • Going to the highest point.
  • Increasing in drag.

Explanation

The advancing blade moves into the direction of flight, so its relative airflow equals rotor speed plus forward airspeed. The higher airspeed over the aerofoil produces more lift on that side of the disc, which is why dissymmetry of lift must be corrected by flapping. It does not climb to the highest point at this instant because of the 90-degree phase lag.

it increases in lift and also it flaps up.
