Module 15. Gas turbine engine

Why is the hydromechanical governor fitted to a gas turbine engine fuel pump?

  • To enable the engine to operate over a wide range of fuel SGs.
  • To enable efficient control of fuel flow to be maintained at altitude.
  • To enable the engine to operate over a wide range of fuel flow.

Explanation

A hydromechanical (governor) fuel pump uses the fuel itself as the working medium and senses speed by centrifugally generated fuel pressure. Because that pressure depends on fuel density, the design compensates so the governor holds the set RPM across the range of fuel specific gravities likely to be used.

What is SGs?

Specific gravity
changes at altitudes so the hydromechanical governor compensates for the variation in fuel SGs
