Module 4. Electronic fundamentals

When a hole diffuses from a p-region to the n-region it

  • becomes a minority carrier in the n-region.
  • lowers the potential barrier.
  • raises the potential barrier.

Explanation

As holes diffuse from the P-region into the N-region and recombine, they leave behind uncovered negative acceptor ions on the P-side and add positive charge on the N-side. This build-up of immobile charge strengthens the depletion-region field, raising the potential barrier that opposes further diffusion until equilibrium is reached.

boholbo asking:

Does that mean current flows through forward biased?
If then, is it right to lower the potential barrier?
Of course, If reverse biased flows, raise the potential barrier.
