Module 12. Helicopter aerodynamics, structures and systems

A helicopter tail rotor is fitted to

  • counteract main rotor torque and provide normal directional control.
  • counteract engine torque and provide a rapid turn facility.
  • permit directional control.

Explanation

The tail rotor counteracts the main-rotor torque reaction to stop the fuselage spinning, and by varying its thrust it also provides normal yaw/directional control. This combined statement is more complete than options citing only directional control or only torque, since the tail rotor performs both functions.

Rotor torque is dependant on engine torque so in this context it is the same. But "provide normal directional control" is more appropriate than "rapid turn facility"

i agree with edya but to be more correct between the 2 answers counteract main rotor torque is more correct and to the point than engine torque. So even if you have a question without the next sentence, you should pick the counteract main rotor one.
