Module 8. Basic aerodynamics

An engine which produces an efflux of high speed will be

  • less efficient.
  • more efficient.
  • unaffected by efflux speed.

Explanation

Propulsive efficiency depends on the difference between jet efflux speed and aircraft speed; a large, high-velocity efflux leaves much kinetic energy in the wake as wasted energy. Accelerating a larger mass of air to a lower velocity gives the same thrust more efficiently, which is why high-bypass engines are more efficient than pure jets.

Hi, what is high speed efflux?
Thanks
