Module 2. Physics

A drive shaft has a speed 150pi radians a second. What is the speed in RPM?

  • 4500.
  • 9000.
  • 1500.

Explanation

To convert from rad/s to RPM, multiply by 60 / (2 pi). So 150 pi x 60 / (2 pi) = 150 x 30 = 4500 RPM. Each revolution is 2 pi radians, and there are 60 seconds in a minute.

Mickyg1986 asking:

Can somebody explain this please?

150pi=x*2pi/60 ; divided for pi and then x= 60*150/2=4500

There are 2 x Pi radians in a full circle. (Pi= 3.14... or 22/7). Rotational speed given in radians per second so divide by 2 Pi to get revolutions per second (rev/s). Multiply that by 60 to get revolutions per minute (RPM).
