Module 2. Physics

You are at the north pole where the temperature is minus 50 degrees C below freezing. What sort of thermometer would you use to measure it?

  • Water.
  • Alcohol.
  • Mercury.

Explanation

Mercury freezes at about minus 39 degrees C, so it cannot measure minus 50 degrees C. Alcohol (spirit) thermometers stay liquid to roughly minus 115 degrees C, making alcohol the correct choice for very low temperatures. A water thermometer would freeze well before that point.

Water freezes at 0*C.
Mercury freezes at -38.8*C.
Alcohol freezes at -114*C.

Both water and mercury are not suited for such temperatures. Your thermometer wouldn't work.
