Module 13. Aircraft aerodynamics, structures and systems

The autothrottle controls the aircraft

  • vertically
  • laterally
  • both later ally and vertically

Explanation

The autothrottle manages engine thrust to control speed or to maintain a vertical path, so it acts on the aircraft in the vertical/longitudinal sense rather than steering it laterally. Lateral guidance (heading and roll) is handled by the autopilot's roll channel through the ailerons, not by the autothrottle.
