Module 8. Basic aerodynamics

Where would you find the normal axis?

  • Through C of G at right angles to longitudinal and lateral axis.
  • Vertically through the centre of pressure at right angles to the chord line.
  • In line with the wing tips, passing through the C of G horizontally.

Explanation

The normal (vertical) axis passes through the centre of gravity at right angles to both the longitudinal and lateral axes, and the aircraft yaws about it. It is referenced to the CG, not the centre of pressure, and it is vertical rather than running between the wingtips, which describes the lateral axis.

All axis travel through the CG and are at right angles to each other.
