Module 8. Basic aerodynamics

Which wing increases drag when the ailerons are moved?

  • Both wings increase drag but the wing with the down-going aileron increases more.
  • Both wings experience an equal increase in drag.
  • Both wings increase drag but the wing with the up-going aileron has more.

Explanation

The down-going aileron raises that wing's lift coefficient, which also raises its induced drag, so the wing with the down-going aileron gains the most drag. This unequal drag yaws the nose away from the turn, the effect known as adverse yaw, which differential ailerons are designed to reduce.

manin asking:

i think the down going wing(i.e.up going aileron) instead of down going aileron (i.e.up going wing) increases more drag

Down going aileron (up going wing) produces more drag. You already asked this question and got response from me. :) http://part66online.com/index.php?mod=view_qa&id=378

is it only due to induced drag that increased the total drag or there are some other reasons too??

Mainly by induced drag.
