Two connected fibre optic cable ends are parallel but not quite touching. This is called
- end to end coupling.
- butt joint coupling.
- lateral gap coupling.

I think you are wrong. End fire coupling is used when you need to couple two parallel beams (not cables) into 1 multimode fibre.

This question has thrown me as well end to end coupling is the joining of two fibre cable by aligning them carefully and bringing them in to close proximity of each other. End To End.
Parallel but not touching meaning side by side you use a lens to focus the beams in to a single fibre. Similar to the pdf above.
I could be completely wrong but if you look at other similar sites they will agree with me.
