Manifold pressure is measured

  • at inlet port above and below ambient conditions
  • at inlet port above and below standard atmosphere at sea level
  • at inlet port indicating boost pressure

Explanation

Manifold (boost) pressure is sensed at the induction inlet port and can read either above ambient (supercharged/boosted) or below ambient (throttled). It is therefore expressed relative to the prevailing ambient atmospheric conditions, not fixed to sea-level standard atmosphere, which is why the indication moves about the actual surrounding pressure.

If a manifold pressure gauge is measuring in a supercharged engine it will measure above 29.92 in Hg.If the supercharge is not use it will measure below that figure. EHJ Pallett Integrated Instruments Page-355
