Module 8. Basic aerodynamics

Other than spoilers, where are speed brakes located?

  • Either side of the fuselage or on the wing.
  • Underneath the fuselage belly near the main landing gear doors.
  • Mounted on the wing trailing edge inboard section.

Explanation

Speed brakes are surfaces deployed to raise drag without changing lift greatly, slowing the aircraft or steepening the descent. Besides wing-mounted spoilers, dedicated speed brakes are often fitted on the sides or rear of the fuselage. So they may be located either on the fuselage sides or on the wing, depending on the type.

How about under wing mounted dive brakes on aircraft like the Douglas SBD Dauntless? Would they not be classed as speed brakes? Also some modern military/naval aircraft have ventral speed brakes (i.e. under the fuselage).

Boeing aircraft also call their spoilers speed brakes. Outboard spoilers are spoilers, inboard are speed brakes. http://www.b737.org.uk/flightcontrols.htm#Spoilers_/_Speedbrakes
