Module 8. Basic aerodynamics

When maintaining level flight an increase in speed will

  • cause the C of P to move aft.
  • cause the C of P to shift forward.
  • have no effect on C of P position.

Explanation

To maintain level flight at higher speed the angle of attack must be reduced because lift rises with the square of speed. As angle of attack decreases, the point of maximum pressure on the aerofoil migrates rearward, so the centre of pressure moves aft. Conversely, slowing down and increasing angle of attack moves the C of P forward.

sharvin kumar asking:

when increase in speed, basically lift increases. so the c of p move forward what!! sorry if i'm incorrect!

Hello.

Please read question carefully. If speed increases, lift increases so the altitude also increases. But key phrase is "maintaining level flight". To maintain level flight with increased speed you should decrease angle of attack. If angle of attack decreased, C of P moves aft.

In level flight CL AND CP are in a straight line. When speed will increase CL will tend to increase, but the autopilot heading hold channel will supply the sensing error signal to the pitch trim motor thereby trimming the nose down attitude due to which the CP willmove aft
