Module 6. Materials & hardware

Avdel rivets are closed by

  • a tapered mandrel.
  • broaching.
  • squeezing.

Explanation

Avdel rivets are set by broaching: a hardened mandrel is drawn through the tubular rivet, expanding it to grip the hole and form the blind head. This pull-through action distinguishes them from rivets closed by squeezing or by a simple tapered mandrel that stays in place.

Georgio asking:

How can it be broaching instead of squeezing

Yeah this one's a bit confusing because squeezing sounds right for a rivet. The thing with Avdel rivets is they're a blind type - when you pull the mandrel through, it actually broaches the bore of the rivet shank to expand it, rather than squashing the whole rivet between dies like a solid rivet. So broaching is the proper term here because the mandrel is cutting and forming the inside of the shank as it's drawn through. Squeezing would only fit a solid rivet you can get to both sides of.
