Module 13. Aircraft aerodynamics, structures and systems

The Janus beam is for

  • working out acceleration
  • levelling the aerial
  • to compensate for attitude changes

Explanation

A Janus arrangement uses pairs of Doppler beams pointing forward and aft. Because errors introduced by pitch (and attitude) shift the two beams in opposite senses, averaging the fore and aft returns cancels the attitude-induced error, giving an accurate ground-speed/drift measurement despite aircraft attitude changes.
