Interpoles 'reduce' armature reaction (which causes reactive sparking). Compensating windings 'prevent' armature reaction.

Interpoles alone cannot entirely eliminate reactance sparking they only "REDUCE" it. To provide assist to interpoles, COMPENSATOR WINDINGS are introduced hence eliminating reactive sparking.
